The biological material bank of the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University (BBM 1FM CU) is part of the international biobank infrastructure BBMRI (Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure) financed by the European Commission. With 35 members and more than 280 associated organizations in more than 30 countries, BBMRI represents one of the most extensive research infrastructures in Europe. BBMRI's goal is to link top biomedical research with banks of biological samples and associated health data.
The Czech national node of biobanks BBMRI.cz (Biobanking and Biomolecular resources Research Infrastructure of the Czech Republic) operates within BBMRI, the aim of which is to build the Czech part of the pan-European network of banks of biological material for biomedical research. The BBMRI.cz project is mainly focused on collecting samples for the study of cancer diseases.
Since September 2013, BBMRI has been part of the European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). The coordinator of the Czech national node BBMRI.cz is the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute in Brno (MMCI).
